Token Counter is a free online tool that counts OpenAI GPT tokens using the o200k_base encoding (GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, o1, o3, o4-mini, GPT-5). Visualize how text is split into BPE tokens with colored highlighting. No data is sent to any server.
What is a Token Counter?
A Token Counter measures how many tokens your text will consume when sent to OpenAI models like GPT-4o and GPT-4.1. Understanding token count helps optimize prompts and avoid exceeding context limits. Pair it with the Text Diff tool to compare token usage between prompt versions.
This tool uses the o200k_base encoding, which is the tokenizer used by GPT-4o, o1, o3, o4-mini, and GPT-5. Each colored segment in the visualization represents one BPE (Byte Pair Encoding) token.
